How Much Does a Matchmaker Cost in Calgary? An Honest Answer

Most matchmakers won't tell you until you've sat through a call. Here is the plain answer, before you spend a minute of your time.

If you have started looking for a matchmaker in Calgary, you have probably noticed something strange. You can read all about their philosophy, their elegance, their belief in love — but nowhere can you find the one thing you actually want to know. What does it cost?

To learn that, you are asked to book a call. Give up an evening, sit through a consultation, and somewhere near the end, the number finally arrives. It is an odd way to treat a simple question. So let us answer it here, plainly, the way we wish someone had answered it for us.

What matchmakers typically charge

Matchmaking in Canada covers a wide range of prices, and it helps to know the shape of it before anyone quotes you a figure.

At the higher end, the well-known luxury firms — the ones serving executives and high-net-worth clients — often charge anywhere from several thousand dollars to twenty or thirty thousand and beyond for a year of service. These are the names that travel between Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver and the major American cities. Their pricing is rarely published, and it frequently shifts depending on who is asking.

In the middle sit the established local services, many charging a few thousand dollars for a membership of several months to a year. And at the more accessible end — where we have deliberately placed ourselves — a serious, human-led membership can be had for a good deal less, without the service becoming any less personal or careful.

The honest summary is this: in Calgary, a real matchmaker — a person, not an app — generally costs somewhere between about one thousand and many thousands of dollars, depending entirely on the service and how it sees you. The spread is enormous. What matters is understanding what sits behind the number.

What you are actually paying for

A matchmaking fee is not a fee for a list of names. It pays for a person's time, judgement and care, and it usually covers several things at once.

There is the private interview, where a real person sits with you and comes to understand what you are looking for — not in the thin way an app collects preferences, but properly.

There is the vetting — the quiet work that happens before you ever meet anyone. Each person is identity-checked, and their background looked into, so that everyone in the room is genuinely who they say they are and genuinely there to marry, not simply passing the time. It is unglamorous, careful work, and it is part of what your fee pays for. It is also the part the apps skip entirely.

There is the careful, one-at-a-time selecting of introductions, each one chosen and reasoned rather than served up at random. And there is the quiet attention around each meeting — the word beforehand, the conversation afterward.

That is where your money goes. The reason the price feels significant is that the work is significant. You are paying for someone to take seriously a part of your life that the apps treat carelessly.

Why the number is so often hidden

Here is the part worth saying gently. When a price is concealed until a sales call, the person considering it is placed at a disadvantage before anything has begun. You cannot compare. You cannot sit with the figure privately and decide in your own time. You must enter a sales conversation simply to be told — and a sales conversation is rarely a fair place to think clearly.

We came to believe that hidden pricing is a quiet form of disrespect. So we did the opposite.

What we charge, openly

The Courtship Bureau publishes every price on its website, for anyone to read, without a call. Our memberships currently range from around $1,299 to $2,999, structured as an enrolment fee and a set of monthly payments rather than one daunting sum. Every figure, every tier, is there in the open on our Membership page, and it does not change based on how you appear on the day.

We would rather you read our prices at your kitchen table, with no one watching, and came to us only once you had genuinely decided. A person who arrives that way arrives clear-eyed — and a clear-eyed beginning is the only kind worth having.

If a matchmaker will not tell you what they charge, it is worth asking, gently, what else they would prefer you did not know.

The full detail of what each membership includes is on our Membership page, and if you would like to understand why we hold to this so firmly, we wrote about it in Why We Publish Our Prices.

For couples further along the road — those who have already had the courtship conversations — we wrote The Conversations That Follow the Wedding, a reflection on the long-term work of marriage.
